April 2004 marked a milestone for the Telecoms Industry; because it is was over 20 years since the barriers were first relaxed over the stranglehold that British Telecom had over the UK telephone market. In its recent report to mark the anniversary since deregulation, OFCOM, the new name of the regulatory authority, commented that BT still maintains a 70% share of the fixed line market. This apparent customer complacency it said, compares unfavourably to the other deregulated Utility markets, that of Electricity and Gas, where in little over 5 years nearly 50% of all consumers whether they be commercial or domestic have switched from their original regional supplier since the market was fully opened up to competition.

That being said the UK still is a very competitive market place for Telecommunications with over 300 different providers, at the last count, available and each of them having a wide variety of differing schemes available covering both inbound and outbound calls.
